Telecom Veteran Brings M2M, International Expertise to Data Carrier

Chandler, AZ; May 23, 2005 — Space Data Corporation, a company providing wireless data services in rural and remote areas, today announced the appointment of Jesús M. Sotomayor to its Board of Directors. Dr. Sotamayor will play a key role on Space Data’s leadership team by providing strategic direction for the company’s data services offerings.

Sotomayor is chairman of both Softel, a telecommunications company specializing in M2M applications, and Méryta, a consulting firm focused on information technology, regulation and telecommunications. He is a former corporate director of the Mexican telecom carrier Telmex, and former chairman of Red Uno, now a Telmex subsidiary.

“Jesús Sotomayor is a communications visionary and we are excited about the unique perspective that he brings to our company,” said Gerald Knoblach, CEO and chairman of Space Data. “In particular, we look forward to his insights regarding the burgeoning Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications market as well as his assistance in bringing Space Data’s unique capabilities to Mexico and Latin America.”

As a serial entrepreneur, Sotomayor launched the data transmission company ITSA, which was acquired by AT&T. He served as general director of AT&T-ITSA, which now does business as Avaya. He also launched and sold Protel, a trunking service company; Tecnoarrenddadra, a leasing company; and Hildebrando, a software firm that is now a subsidiary of Avnet International.

Sotomayor earned a Ph.D. in electronic and communications engineering and currently holds a professor’s chair in telecommunications and information technology at Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). In addition, he is a visiting professor in corporate governance at Instituto Panamericano de Alta Direccion de Empresa (IPADE), recently ranked by The Wall Street Journal as one of the world’s top business schools.

“I’m excited about playing an active role at Space Data,” said Sotamayor. “I plan to leverage my long history in the industry to help identify new markets and new partnerships for Space Data.”
