Space Data Floats Wireless Data Network Over the Gulf

SkySite® Network Delivers Data Services to the Offshore Community

Houston; September 14, 2004 — Space Data Corporation, a company providing wireless data services in rural and remote areas, today announced that it will extend its telemetry services to the Gulf of Mexico region this month. By enhancing the coverage of its balloon-borne SkySite® Network, the company will be able to offer affordable, all-weather, low to medium data rate wireless communications for a wide range of offshore, near-shore and onshore applications.

Space Data is currently providing telemetry services for the energy industry in West Texas and eastern New Mexico, specifically focusing on SCADA communications. In addition to communications for SCADA and measurement systems, the company enables offshore information service providers and production operators to offer their customers wellhead and valve status, vessel status monitoring, GPS-based fleet tracking, and alarm or emergency event notification.

Space Data’s SkySite Network utilizes ReFLEX™ technology, a proven wireless data standard developed by Motorola to provide a highly reliable data delivery platform.

“There are thousands of isolated structures and service vessels in the Gulf that will benefit from affordable wide area data services combined with cost effective monitoring and GPS tracking equipment,” said Mark Davis, Space Data’s director of marketing. “In addition to affordability, we offer the coverage ubiquity of satellite systems but at a frequency (900 MHz) that enables dependable and reliable all-weather operations. We are committed to working closely with our customers and our value added resellers to ensure protocol transparency and end-to-end system compatibility, regardless of the application.”

The SkySite Network is unique in its ability to provide reliable, affordable data communications to rural and remote areas. Building on decades of success by weather service organizations around the world that have used balloon-borne systems to gather meteorological data, the company has developed a command and control system that enables the management of a large “constellation” of SkySite Platforms. The SkySite Platforms deliver reliable, digital signals over hundreds of miles. At an altitude of 100,000 feet, a single SkySite Platform can provide service to an area the size of Oklahoma.

Representatives from Space Data will be introducing their system to the offshore energy community at the Offshore Communications 2004 conference and expo in Houston today through September 16 in Booth 152.
