The responsive nature of Space Data’s balloon-borne capabilities is well-suited to U.S. Forest Service needs, such as communications support for wildland fires and monitoring forest health. Floating cost-effective repeater payloads above forest fires provides a more responsive capability and precludes the challenging transportation issues in positioning a temporary terrestrial repeater and the risk of damage if overtaken by fire. In addition to responsive voice communications, Space Data’s commercial 900 MHz GPS tracking capabilities have applications in the rural and remote areas typical of wildland fires and rescue operations, providing up-to-the-minute coordination of various emergency response systems and personnel.
